HYC Starlings at Taupo and Ngaroto Regattas
The HYC Starling fleet has had a successful start to the season. We took our four more experienced Starling sailors to Taupo for the second in the Starling Traveller Series Regattas. They competed in the development fleet having barely had half a season in Starlings each so far and Eoghan even less than that. Nevertheless despite strong winds on Day 1, contrasting with a near flat calm on day 2, HYC managed a 1,2,3 with Carly coming in first, Aiden second and Rose third. Sadly, Eoghan suffered a broken rudder before race 1 and had to forfeit the first two races until we could get him back on the water again. Even then, he managed an excellent second place on the only race of day 2.
A fortnight later and the Starlings were again at it on Lake Ngaroto for the Waikato Thames Yachting Association Regatta. This time Aiden, Carly, Eoghan and Rose were joined by Mateo in his first regatta. Once again there were strong winds of 15-20knots gusting up to 25knots. We had a number of good capsizes, a dismasting and another broken rudder. Carly however managed the conditions well coming in first and Rose second with Aiden's dismasting scuppering his chances sadly. Eoghan and Mateo sailed strongly in challenging conditions and everyone learned lots - including when to get new side stays!
We're all looking forward to more in the weeks to come.
